既然您是英格兰人,那是什么机缘促使您来到一家中国IT企业工作的

You’re from Scotland, how did you end up working for an IT company in China?


2015年,我来到了上海。在那之前,我的工作经历大多跟音视频(AV)和IT相关。我曾担任三星公司在苏格兰和爱尔兰地区的区域开发经理,也曾先后在宏基、英特尔、索尼、松下搜诺思等企业从事市场营销和销售相关工作。我还当过自由摄影师和自由编辑,并在一档网络电视节目中担任过四年的制作人(主要负责管理直播活动及纪录片制作,因此我的工作经历一直都跟技术和业务开发相关。如今,我已在上海成家(我的妻子是中国人,我们多年前在爱丁堡认识)。在寻找跟我的背景经历相符的工作过程中,我发现并加入了4U


I came to Shanghai in 2015. Prior to that, much of my experience was related to AV and IT – I was a Regional Development Manager for Samsung across Scotland & Ireland, and I worked in marketing and sales for companies like Acer, Intel, Sony, Panasonic & Sonos. I am also a freelance videographer/editor and spent 4 years as the producer of an online TV show (managing live stream events and documentary production), so my background has always been related to technology and business development.  I am now married here (to my Chinese wife that I met in Edinburgh many years ago) and I found 4U Systems during my search for a job that matched my background.

What do you enjoy most about your time at 4U Systems?


我之所以来到4U工作,是因为他们之前的《财富》世界500强客户阵容以及他们的国际化思维模式给我留下了深刻印象。在这工作了快三年后,我发现我们团队中所有成员不仅对自身负责的产品都了如指掌,而且在各个阶段也都非常重视专业素质的培养。我喜欢跟跨国公司客户坐在一起聊聊工作并向他们提供专业化服务,因为这种工作方式非常有助于我开展业务拓展工作。虽然我们周围的同事几乎全都是中国人,但是自打我加入这个团队以来,大家对我都非常热情,而且也很乐意帮助我。此外,现在我所从事的(技术和房地产)行业瞬息万变,再加上中国经济的飞速发展,可以说这个岗位非常适合我,因为它将给我带来既有趣又难忘的工作经历。


I joined 4U Systems because I was impressed by their list of previous Fortune500 clients and their international mindset, and after working here for almost 3 years I can see that our team has a lot of knowledge about the products they work with but also put a big emphasis on professionalism at all stages.  I enjoy being able to sit in front of multi-national clients and have a really good service to offer them, as it makes my job in business development much easier. Our company is almost all Chinese but the team has been welcoming and supportive to me ever since I joined. Plus, I’m working in industries with such dynamic change right now (technology & real estate) – combined with the rapid growth of things in China, it’s a perfect position to create some interesting and memorable work.


您在4U工作期间最让您感到自豪的成就是什么? 

What is your proudest accomplishment at 4U?



2016年初,我开始接手新客户——WeWork公司的项目。自那时起,我们便与WeWork建立了良好的合作关系,并共同完成了15个建设项目(其中14个项目在中国,1个项目在新加坡),提供了包括设计、安装和维护在内的全套完整解决方案,更好地满足了其对IT系统/音视频系统/安防系统的需求。在与WeWork合作的过程中,让我印象最深的是我们4U团队全体成员虽然都承受着巨大压力,但仍充分展现出了出色的工作能力,而且还团结一致,不断交付优质的工程;而且在跟WeWork合作过程中,我还利用自身在战略发展方面的经验快速找到解决问题的方法并大胆提出有助于WeWork提升工作效率的新方案,我们始终都致力于为WeWork提供最佳服务。此外,能够有机会参观这些工程现场并投身其中,体验我们一手打造的作品也让我倍感自豪。这样的机会在跟大多数客户合作实施项目过程中都很难遇到。就在我出席客户项目开业典礼的当天,正好我的双胞胎孩子也在200米开外的一家医院里出生了,这真的是太凑巧了。


In early 2016 I started pursuing a new client lead – WeWork. Since then we have built and established a strong working relationship with them and have completed 16 building projects together (15 China, 1 Singapore), providing a total solutions package of design, installation & maintenance for their IT/AV/Security systems requirements. It has been impressive to see our 4U team show their abilities under pressure and consistently deliver high quality projects, but it has also been a great opportunity to use my experience of strategic development to find ways to resolve problems and come up with new ideas that helped WeWork and also enables us to offer them the best service. Plus, it’s cool that I can visit and work inside these locations and experience what we accomplished – not something you can do with most clients (and on a side note – being able to see one of my client’s projects open on the same day that my twins were born in the hospital 200m away was a funny coincidence).


目前,企业办公相关技术进步之快可谓日新月异,因此各家公司也很不确定应该将IT预算投资在哪些方面。您认为市场上哪些领域值得4U的客户重点关注?

There have been quite a lot of developments in technology for corporate offices, and not a lot of certainty where companies should be investing their IT budget. What have you seen in the market that would be worth a closer look for 4U’s clients?


IT预算在各个领域都面临着压力,因此客户也日益要求我们能够解释IT支出的真正价值。与此同时,越来越多的公司都倾向于基于业务活动而调整方案设计,从而改善工作环境,因为这有助于提升企业的创造力、生产力、员工满意度以及更好地留住人才/吸引新人才。技术能够通过人们一般所称的“工作场所技术解决方案”从多个方面对方案设计的调整进行补充和提供支持。这些技术解决方案可包括集成预订系统(提高会议效率和更好地激励员工管理时间并获取所需资源)以及用于识别办公桌/会议室或办公室其他设施使用模式的传感器等方面。此类数据可不断以被动方式获取,并供各相关人员使用,从而便于企业通过以下途径提高运营效率,包括优化未来扩建/新建办公室的设计方案、调整楼宇运营和设施管理以避免资源浪费、为员工/管理层赋能等。这意味着我们更易于说明这项技术所花费的额外成本的合理性并在各项预算之间实现均衡,而且客户也可以从预算中获得实实在在的好处。4U正在积极提供这些服务,而且越来越多的客户也在向我们提出对这项技术的需求。


Budget sare under pressure from all fronts, so the demands on justifying the real value of IT expenditure are growing. Simultaneously, the growing trend of activity-based design changes to improve the quality of working environments is helping to boost creativity, productivity, staff satisfaction and talent retention/new talent attraction. Technology can complement and support design changes in a number of ways in what can be classified generally as ‘workplace technology solutions’.  This can include things like integrated booking systems (to improve meeting efficiency and empower staff more in managing their time and accessing resources) and sensors to identify patterns of use in desks/meeting rooms or any other parts of the office.  This data can be captured passively and constantly, and can be used by a number of stakeholders to make their company more efficient – for optimizing the design of future expansions/new offices, for adapting building operations and facility management to avoid waste and for staff/manager empowerment. This means that the additional costs for this technology are much easier to justify and spread between budgets, and there are clear tangible benefits to gain from it. 4U Systems is actively offering these services and we are receiving more and more requests from clients about it.
